Silence = death

This is a very brief blog, based on two important articles I've read today. I'm not going to give you chapter and verse about the articles, but I urge you to read them yourself and take them seriously. I implore you to resist the attacks on freedom, democracy and liberty raised in the articles.

The first is an opinion piece by Kenan Malik, in which the failure of the libertarian left is placed in the spotlight. Malik points out, correctly, that the left has failed to fight for individual freedom and, as a result, the political far right has been able to position itself as the guardian of liberty. The point that particularly jumped out is that since the start of the Covid pandemic, 242 laws have been introduced in the UK as 'statutory instruments', or, in everyday language, laws not subject to any parliamentary scrutiny and only approved retrospectively. Or, in even more everyday language, whatever the hell the government wants.

The second piece is a news story about government plans to effectively ban the teaching in school of anything that might oppose capitalism. A plan which places anti-capitalist ideas on a par with criminality and terrorism. No more Marx, Engels, Chomsky, Mao, Paris Commune, Russian Revolution. Trade Unionism. The only learning is learning how to suffer like a good little pleb in order to make corporations rich. Education, the fascist way.

As I said, this is not a weighty blog. It's a knee-jerk reaction to those two pieces. I urge you again to read them and to join the dots. Don't sleepwalk into fascism.

For those willing to resist, from now on I will be including links in my blogs to anti-capitalist and anti-fascist resources. Here's the link to the Green Anti-Capitalist Front
